Portland gives wedding photography a distinctive canvas—from soft overcast light and city architecture to forests, gardens and golden summer evenings. The right plan connects your priorities to the way the day will actually unfold.

01

List combinations, not every possible relationship

Formal portrait time expands quickly when every variation is added. Prioritize the combinations you will actually value and let candid coverage capture the rest of the family story. Mark true must-have groups separately from nice-to-have combinations so the photographer knows what survives if the ceremony runs late.

02

Tell the photographer about family dynamics privately

Divorce, estrangement, mobility needs or sensitive relationships can affect grouping order. A quiet heads-up helps avoid uncomfortable surprises. Share only the operational context the photographer needs—who should not be posed together, who needs to be photographed early, or which relationship labels should be avoided.

03

Put larger groups first

When practical, photograph the largest or hardest-to-gather groups before releasing people. The photographer may recommend a different order based on location and timeline. Sequence elderly relatives, young children or anyone with mobility constraints around their comfort and departure needs rather than rigidly following family hierarchy.

04

Assign a person who knows the family

A photographer may not know Aunt Maria from Cousin Sam. A helper from each side can gather the next group while the current portrait is being made. Choose helpers who actually recognize the people on the list and give them the final version before the wedding instead of recruiting someone on the spot.

05

Keep the list readable

Use names and relationships rather than vague labels. Share the final list in the format your photographer requests instead of handing over a new version on the wedding morning. Save the same approved list in your couple account with portrait timing so the planner and photographer are not working from competing versions.

Portland wedding planning FAQ

How many family photo combinations should we have?

There is no ideal number. Ask your photographer how much time your specific list will require and prioritize the groups that matter most.

Should we give the photographer a giant shot list?

A focused family-group list is useful. For general moments and creative images, discuss priorities and trust the coverage approach you hired them for.
