How much time do you have to plan?

The number is less important than the sequence. Use this guide to identify the decisions that unlock the next ones instead of trying to do everything at once.

01

Make the invitation policy understandable

Whether the wedding is adults-only, includes immediate-family children or welcomes every age, consistency and clear addressing prevent confusion. Avoid making parents guess from vague wording. Make the RSVP system match the invitation policy too, so households cannot accidentally add children who were not included or omit children whose meals and seats you need to count.

02

Ask the venue where children can safely be

Water, stairs, roads, fireplaces, balconies and large outdoor properties can change supervision needs. Parents remain responsible for their children, but venue layout still matters. Ask the venue about any areas that are restricted or operationally difficult for families and communicate relevant information without implying that normal venue staffing provides childcare.

03

Treat meals as a real RSVP detail

Ask the caterer whether children's meals, high chairs or booster seats are available and how ages affect meal counts. Collect what the caterer actually needs rather than inventing a complicated RSVP. Reconcile those needs with rentals and the seating chart before final counts so a child's place setting, chair and meal are treated as one plan.

04

Seat families for the wedding they are attending

Parents may appreciate easy exits during the ceremony and enough room at dinner for child seating. A thoughtful table location can matter more than a bag of activities. Consider sound level, stroller or mobility space and proximity to the people a family may rely on rather than automatically grouping every child at a separate kids' table.

05

Consider the clock

Young children may fade earlier than adult guests. If many families are attending, communicate key timing clearly so parents can decide how long to stay. If childcare or a separate kids' activity is offered, define who provides it, where it occurs and what parents are still responsible for. Save meal, seating and high-chair counts in your couple account.

Portland wedding planning FAQ

How do we communicate an adults-only wedding?

Address invitations to the invited adults and use clear, courteous wording in your wedding information so parents can make arrangements.

Do we need special entertainment for kids?

Not necessarily. Age mix, event length and venue matter more than following a universal rule.
