01

Start at the guest entrance, not the coat rack

Walk the route from parking, rideshare or shuttle drop-off to the event entrance and identify where guests can remove wet coats and close umbrellas before entering the main space. A coat rack across the reception room does not solve a crowded, wet doorway.

Check whether the same entrance will be used after dark and whether guests returning for belongings will cross vendor teardown or transportation traffic.

02

Capacity matters when almost everyone brings outerwear

A few hooks may work in mild weather but fail when most guests arrive with coats. Ask what the venue normally does for cool or wet events and compare available hanging space with your guest count rather than assuming an existing rack is sufficient.

If additional racks are needed, confirm who provides them, where they can be placed and whether hangers, claim tags or staffing are part of the plan.

03

Give wet umbrellas a safe landing place

Wet umbrellas can create slippery floors, blocked doorways and water around guest seating. Use venue-approved stands, mats or another containment plan near the arrival point and assign someone to notice when the area needs attention.

If guests will move between buildings or outdoor spaces later, make sure umbrella storage does not strand the umbrellas somewhere guests cannot retrieve them for the next transition.

04

Decide whether storage is staffed or self-service

A self-service rack and a staffed coat check create different needs for space, security and retrieval. If the venue provides attendants, confirm service hours and what items they will accept. If it is self-service, make the location obvious and keep valuables out of an unsecured storage assumption.

Clarify whether the venue, planner or another team member is responsible for the area so no one discovers during guest arrival that everyone thought someone else was managing it.

05

Plan the end-of-night retrieval rush

Guests often retrieve coats at the same time that transportation arrives and venue teardown begins. Keep the retrieval area and exit route clear, and make sure the storage system is easy to navigate when many people are leaving at once.

Add coat and umbrella logistics to the venue notes in your couple account, especially if weather changes the arrival setup. Wedding Builder can keep guest-comfort decisions connected to venue and transportation planning.

Portland wedding planning FAQ

Does every Portland wedding need a coat check?

No. The useful question is whether your season, venue layout and guest arrival plan create a real need for outerwear storage. Cool or wet-weather weddings often benefit from a deliberate solution even when a formal staffed coat check is unnecessary.

Who provides coat racks for a wedding?

Venue inclusions vary. Confirm the number and capacity of existing racks, then ask whether the venue, rental company or another provider supplies anything additional you need.

Where should wedding guests leave wet umbrellas?

Choose a venue-approved location near the arrival transition where water can be contained without blocking the doorway. Also consider whether guests will need their umbrellas again when moving between spaces or leaving at night.
